While it is possible to use essential oils at a 20% dilution, I highly advise starting at the lowest recommended rate and gradually increasing only if your specific needs require it. As essential oils are about 200 times more concentrated than other plant-based preparations, a small amount provides significant benefits.

Pharmacology & Research Studies
Stress Reduction & Relaxation
Research indicates that balsam for essential oil is a potent agent for physiological and psychological relaxation. A 2022 study involving 26 university students demonstrated that short-term inhalation of the oil significantly reduced sympathetic nervous activity while improving mood and reducing anxiety and tension. ⁽⁹⁾ A separate 2018 trial found that topical application of balsam fir oil to middle-aged women resulted in reduced physical and psychological stress, improved sleep quality, and decreased fatigue. ⁽¹⁰⁾More recently, a 2023 study of 26 menopausal women showed that inhaling the oil for just three minutes enhanced parasympathetic nerve activity, leading to feelings of comfort, relaxation, and improved mood. ⁽¹¹⁾
Tick Control
Beyond relaxation, balsam fir essential oil has shown surprising efficacy in pest management. A 2022 study examining the oil's acaricidal properties against overwintering blacklegged ticks revealed that its effectiveness is highly temperature-dependent. The research found significantly higher tick mortality rates at temperatures below 4°C compared to 20°C, with effectiveness dropping by approximately 50% at the warmer threshold. This suggests that cold winter conditions may actually enhance the oil's potency as a natural tick management treatment. ⁽¹²⁾
