  • Important Safety Notes  ⁽²⁾

    • Kidney Disease: Consult a doctor before use, as compromised kidneys may struggle to filter excess magnesium, leading to buildup.

    • Heart Conditions: Those with heart failure or severe cardiovascular issues should seek advice, as heat and magnesium absorption can alter blood pressure and strain the heart.

    • Low Blood Pressure: Avoid if blood pressure is uncontrolled, since warm baths can cause dizziness by widening blood vessels.

    • Broken Skin: Do not use on open wounds, burns, or active infections, as the solution will irritate damaged tissue.

    • Pregnancy: Keep water temperature below 39°C (102°F) and consult a midwife, particularly in the first trimester or for high-risk pregnancies.

    • Diabetes & Neuropathy: Use extreme caution; reduced sensation in the feet and legs increases the risk of burning from hot water.

    • Children: Only use under direct medical supervision.

  • Patch Test Note:

    • While Epsom salt is generally safe for topical use, a patch test is recommended, especially for those with sensitive skin or open wounds. Dissolve a small amount of salt in warm water and apply the solution to a small area of skin (such as the inner forearm). Alternatively, for scrub use, mix a pinch of salt with a carrier oil and apply. Observe for 24 hours, monitoring for any stinging, redness, irritation, or dryness. If any of these occur, discontinue use or dilute further.

  • Method of Application: Topical use only

Pharmacology & Research Studies

Acne & Skin Health

Beyond its traditional use in bathwater for muscle relief, Epsom salt has gained attention for topical applications. When mixed with water or a carrier oil like coconut or olive, the crystals form a gentle scrub that removes dead skin cells, leaving the complexion smoother and more radiant. ⁽⁸⁾ This mechanical exfoliation may also help unclog pores and manage acne breakouts. ⁽⁸⁾ For inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, the magnesium sulfate content may soothe irritation and lessen pruritus, though clinical evidence remains limited. ⁽⁸⁾

Arthritis & Inflammatory Conditions

A 2025 randomized controlled trial examined 64 adult patients with knee osteoarthritis, finding that those who used Epsom salt baths for seven days experienced significant reductions in pain and improved function in daily living compared to the control group receiving standard care. ⁽⁶⁾ Another study on arthritic patients similarly reported reductions in pain, discomfort, and joint stiffness. ⁽⁷⁾ Furthermore, when applied as a fomentation, Epsom salt has been shown to reduce knee swelling and alleviate joint pain. ⁽⁸⁾

A small 2004 study involving 19 participants showed that blood levels of magnesium and sulfate increased after taking a bath. ⁽⁷⁾ Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, Epsom salts may help reduce inflammation, ease muscle aches and pains, and relieve muscle cramping. ⁽⁷⁾

Sleep & Stress Aid

Research from a 2019 meta-analysis of 13 trials confirms that warm baths significantly shorten the time to fall asleep and improve overall rest. ⁽²⁾ This effect is driven by the body's cooling process after heat exposure, which signals the brain to initiate sleep. ⁽²⁾ While the study focused on temperature, adding Epsom salts introduces a potential, though unproven, secondary factor: magnesium. ⁽²⁾ Since magnesium is known to naturally dampen stress hormones like cortisol and support calming neurotransmitters, it is hypothesized that soaking could amplify relaxation. ⁽²⁾ However, because it is not yet confirmed if enough magnesium enters the bloodstream through the skin to cause these specific neurological shifts, the primary sleep benefit likely remains the thermal regulation, with the minerals serving as a possible complementary aid. ⁽²⁾
